Preventing motor vehicle accidents caused by distraction
Pennsylvania readers should be well aware of the dangers posed by distracted driving. Despite widespread awareness of the dangers of this behavior, it continues to be a problem, placing many motorists at risk for accidents and serious injuries. In order to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents related to distraction, namely cellphone use and texting, April has been designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
According to AAA, distracted driving primarily comes in three different forms. There is visual distraction, cognitive distraction and texting or phone use. Visual distraction includes anything that takes a driver’s eyes off the road, such as looking at a billboard or a passenger in the car. Cognitive distraction is anything that causes the mind of to wander instead of focusing on the road, including emotional duress, being lost in thought or daydreaming. The distractions caused by cellphones are well-known and widely recognized.
Even one moment of distraction can result in detrimental consequences. Swerving, abrupt braking and driving at excessive speeds are all common behaviors exhibited by distracted drivers. In fact, authorities state that these drivers act similarly to drunk drivers.
There is no excuse for distracted driving. Bringing awareness to the dangers and potential consequences may go a long way in curtailing this rampant safety issue, but Pennsylvania victims should also learn about their rights when injured in motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted drivers. With the help of an experienced legal professional, financial compensation may be sought and obtained for any serious injury, wrongful death, or even emotional pain and suffering.
